We decided to switch Everett into cloth diapers when he was two months old after all of the research that we had been doing about cloth diapering and the impacts that it has on our beautiful earth. For example, did you know that "each child in disposable diapers uses more than 6,500 diapers from birth through potty learning; producing more than 1 ton of garbage per child, per year they are in diapers. Disposable diapers account for approximately 7,580,000,000 pounds of human waste per year in landfills." (From 5 Fantastic Reasons to Switch to Cloth Diapers) I mean think about it- EVERYONE poops which means that most likely EVERYONE wore some type of diaper- that is a lot of trash (and poop!)
Another reason why we decided to switch Everett to cloth diapers is to save money! We are working on getting out of debt (thank you Dave Ramsey!) so any time we can cut down our spending is great! It is hard to give an average savings because there are so many types of cloth diapers out there to pick from. You can buy prefolds and covers and save a lot lot lot of money or you can buy AOIs or pocket diapers and spend a little bit more, it is all about a matter of convenience versus cost. AOIs are the most like disposables in the way that you don't have use any inserts

- Check out this page to calculate how much you will save using cloth diapers. It allows you to actually put in your data (types of diapers) and see what your savings are!
Overall we have been very happy with switching Everett from disposable diapers- especially because we don't have to change his clothes over and over again because he doesn't leak out of the cloth diapers like he did with the disposables! He also has a pretty cute fluffy butt! :)

I used cloth diapers for my 3 children, but they DID leak! I'm glad to hear they've improved upon them since then. Congratulations for making a difference!

DeleteI was just recently thinking of switching over. We tried it with Ari at a REALLY difficult time when she just learned how to take them off and we couldn't keep them on her. Ciro is 8 months old so I might just start now anyways. What brand do you get that don't leak? And do you bleach the inserts?
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely not too late to start! I like bumGenius (www.cottonbabies.com) and Comfy Rumps (www.comfyrumps.com)and haven't had any problems with leaks with either type of those. I personally don't bleach the inserts because I haven't had any issues with staining. You can always "sun bleach" them on a clothes line or by laying them outside. If you want to come over sometime I can show you everything!
